Oshawa Prestige Windows & Doors does more vinyl window replacement. Oshawa has a lot of 1950s bungalows and 1990s builder-grade sliders, and both are usually ready for new units by now. Vinyl windows are made of uPVC, the hard white plastic that never needs paint and can't rot. In plain terms, you get a frame you wash, not one you scrape. We measure every opening twice, once for the quote and once more before anything is ordered. That's most of the job.

Oshawa Prestige Windows & Doors provides vinyl replacement windows to Oshawa and surrounding Ontario cities, including Whitby, Courtice, Ajax, Bowmanville and Pickering. A typical 10-opening house is done in one day by a two-person crew, and full-frame jobs take one to two days. Our own crews do the work, never subcontractors, and every install carries a 5-year installation warranty on top of the maker's warranty. Want the same look in a swing-out style? See our casement windows page.

Types of Vinyl Window Replacement in Oshawa

Every style below comes in vinyl, in white or a colour, with the glass package you choose. We usually mix two or three styles on one house, and most of the vinyl windows we fit end up white inside and a colour outside.

  • Vinyl Casement Windows

A casement window is hinged on the side and cranks out like a door. It seals tightest of any opening style because the sash presses into the frame when it locks. Kitchens over the sink and bedrooms on the windy side get casements more than anything else. If you ask us, it's the best all-round window for a lake-facing wall.

  • Vinyl Slider Windows

A slider window opens left to right on a track, so nothing sticks out into a deck or walkway. Single sliders move one sash; double sliders move both. They cost a little less than casements, and they're the style most 1990s Durham subdivisions got from the builder. We often swap old sliders for casements, but plenty of people keep the look.

  • Single and Double Hung Windows

A double hung window has two sashes that slide up and down, and both tilt in so you can wash the outside glass from the bedroom. It suits older brick homes in the downtown core where the original openings were tall and narrow. Single hung units move only the bottom sash and run a bit cheaper.

  • Vinyl Picture Windows

A picture window doesn't open, so there's no hinge or track to leak. That makes it the best energy rating of any style and the cheapest per square foot of glass. We pair one with casements on either side for a living room that still gets fresh air. Window Mart lists picture windows from $279 before install.

  • Awning and Hopper Windows

An awning window is hinged at the top and tilts out at the bottom, so you can leave it open in light rain. A hopper window does the opposite and tips in, which is why basements use them. Both are small, both seal well, and both go nicely under or over a picture window.

  • Triple Pane Windows

Triple pane windows add a third layer of glass and a second sealed gap. They cost about $100 to $300 more per window than double pane (HomeStars), and they're heavier. Honestly, we only push them on north walls, lake-facing rooms and bedrooms near Highway 401, where cold and noise are worst. Cold glass tells you.

  • Energy Efficient Windows With Low-E and Argon

Energy efficient windows start with glass, not the frame. A Low-E coating is an invisible layer that bounces heat back into the room in January. Argon gas between the panes slows heat loss better than plain air. A warm-edge spacer keeps the glass edge warmer, so you get less frost in the bottom corners.

How Much Does Vinyl Window Replacement Cost in Oshawa?

Most vinyl windows in Oshawa cost $500 to $1,400 per opening installed, depending on size, style and glass. Canadian Choice lists casement and awning windows at $500 to $1,000 in Oshawa, and Clera starts sliders and hung windows around $700 installed. Full-frame work, triple pane glass and custom colours push a window toward the top of that range.

Full-Frame Replacement or Retrofit Installation?

There are two ways to put in vinyl replacement windows. A retrofit installation slides the new window into the old frame, so the inside trim and plaster stay put. A full-frame replacement takes everything out down to the rough opening, the framed hole in the wall, and builds back from there.

In plain terms, retrofit is a crown and full-frame is pulling the tooth. A crown is fine when the root is healthy. That's why the estimator checks every sill with a moisture meter before we price anything.

  • Retrofit fits when the old frame is solid, square and dry. It's faster and cheaper, and the inside trim stays.
  • Full-frame is the call when a sill is soft, the frame is out of square, or you want more glass. It costs more and takes one to two days.
  • Same-size replacement on a house doesn't need a building permit in Oshawa. Making an opening bigger does.

What Makes a Vinyl Window Last

Most modern windows last 20 to 30 years, according to Canadian Choice. The frame isn't usually what fails. It's the sealed unit, the glass sandwich, losing its seal and fogging between the panes. Welded corners and a multi-chamber frame, which is honeycombed inside like a cooler wall, keep a vinyl window square through years of freeze-thaw. Look for the ENERGY STAR label too: since 2020 Canada uses one national standard, with a U-factor of 1.22 or lower (NRCan).

Vinyl Windows FAQ

Are vinyl windows good for Ontario winters?

Yes. A good vinyl window with Low-E glass and argon fill holds heat well through a Durham winter, and the frame doesn't rot or need paint. Look for the ENERGY STAR label, which since 2020 means a U-factor of 1.22 or lower. Install quality matters as much as the window, so ask how the gaps get sealed.

How long do vinyl replacement windows last?

Most last 20 to 30 years. The weak point is the sealed glass unit, which can fog when its edge seal fails, not the vinyl frame. Welded corners, a warm-edge spacer and a careful install stretch that life. On our jobs, the 5-year installation warranty covers the install, and the maker covers the window itself.

Is triple pane worth it over double pane?

On some walls, yes. Triple pane adds about $100 to $300 per window and cuts cold spots and road noise. It pays on north walls, rooms facing Lake Ontario and bedrooms near Highway 401. On a sheltered south wall, double pane with Low-E glass usually does the job for less money.

Can you replace just a few windows?

Yes. Plenty of people start with the four or five worst openings and do the rest in a year or two. We match the style and colour so the house still looks like one job. Starting with the drafty bedrooms and the foggy units usually gets you the most comfort for the money.

How long does it take to get new vinyl windows?

Most custom vinyl windows take 6 to 10 weeks from order to install. Wood-clad units and special shapes run longer. The install itself is quick: a typical 10-opening house takes one day with a two-person crew, and full-frame jobs take one to two days. We check measure every opening before ordering.

Do I need a permit to replace windows in Oshawa?

Not for a same-size swap on a house. The City of Oshawa lists same-size window and door replacement as work that doesn't need a building permit. If you want a bigger opening or a new one cut into the wall, that's an alteration and needs a permit. We tell you which applies at the measure.
