Oshawa Prestige Windows & Doors handles entry door replacement. Oshawa front doors take the wind straight off Lake Ontario on south-facing streets, and after 25 winters most of them stick in July and draft in January. We replace the whole system: the door, the frame, the sill and the seals. In plain terms, you get a unit built to close square, not an old frame shimmed to fit a new slab. Cold air under the door? The sill decides.

Oshawa Prestige Windows & Doors provides front door replacement to Oshawa and surrounding Ontario cities, including Courtice, Ajax, Whitby, Bowmanville and Pickering. Most entry doors go in during a single day, and you're never left with an open hole overnight. On a recent job in Courtice we put in a fibreglass door with two sidelites and a new patio door on the same day. Every install carries our 5-year installation warranty.

Types of Entry Door Replacement in Oshawa

Pick the material first, then the glass and the shape. These are the setups we fit on most entry doors. Oshawa homes from every decade end up with one of them.

  • Fiberglass Entry Doors

A fibreglass entry door doesn't dent, rust or rot, and it can be painted or stained to look like real oak. It holds up best on doors that get full sun or lake wind. It costs more than steel. If you ask us, it's the right door for most Oshawa homes that plan to stay put.

  • Steel Entry Doors

A steel entry door has a foam core inside a steel skin, so it insulates well and costs less than fibreglass. It's strong, but it can dent, and a chip at the bottom can rust if you don't touch it up. Steel makes good sense on a side door or a garage entry that doesn't face the weather.

  • Entry Doors With Sidelites

Sidelites are the narrow glass panels beside the door. They bring light into a dark front hall, which most 1970s split-levels badly need. One or two sidelites change the price more than anything else. We use tempered glass in them, the safety kind that breaks into small pieces.

  • Front Doors With a Transom

A transom is the glass panel above the door. It adds light without giving up privacy at eye level, and it suits older two-storeys with high ceilings in the entry. Many downtown Oshawa homes had one that got boarded over years ago. We can bring it back.

  • Double Entry Doors

Two doors in one frame, both swinging open for a wide entry. They look grand, and they make moving furniture easy. One door is fixed with bolts at the top and bottom most of the time. They need a wider rough opening, so they mostly suit bigger homes or full-frame jobs.

  • Decorative Glass Front Doors

Glass inserts range from clear to frosted, textured or wrought-iron patterns. Frosted and textured glass lets light in but blurs the view, so the hall stays private. Laminated glass is the pick if security worries you, since it holds together even when cracked. Honestly, a small change in glass changes the whole look of the house.

  • Wood Entry Doors

Real wood looks warm and can be carved or custom built. It also needs refinishing every few years and moves with the seasons. We put in wood doors for people who love them and will look after them. For everyone else, a stained fibreglass door gets you most of the look with far less work.

How Much Does Entry Door Replacement Cost in Oshawa?

Most front doors in Oshawa cost $2,000 to $4,500 supplied and installed, depending on material and glass. Home Depot Canada puts the average at $3,900 for a pre-hung fibreglass door with one sidelite. Two sidelites, a transom, decorative glass or a custom colour push the price higher.

Steel or Fibreglass: Which Front Door Fits Your House?

Fibreglass suits most front doors that face the sun or the lake wind, because it won't dent, rust or fade. Steel suits sheltered porches, side doors and tighter budgets, since it costs less and still insulates well. Which way the door faces matters more than anything else.

  • Facing south or west into full sun, or facing the lake wind: fibreglass. It won't get hot to the touch or fade the way painted steel can.
  • Sheltered porch, tight budget, or a side door: steel. It's strong and insulates well.
  • Want a wood grain look you can stain: fibreglass.
  • Planning to sell within a few years: steel with a good paint colour gives the most curb appeal per dollar.

Making a Front Door Harder to Break Into

Most break-ins through a front door don't beat the lock. They split the frame. A multipoint lock bolts the door at the top, middle and bottom with one turn of the handle. We also drive long screws through the strike plate into the house framing, not just the door jamb. Add laminated glass in the sidelites and the door gets a lot harder to force.

Replacing the front door on a house doesn't need a building permit in Oshawa when the opening stays the same size. Making the opening wider for sidelites or double doors does.

Entry Door FAQ

Is fibreglass or steel better for a front door?

Fibreglass is better for most front doors that face sun or weather, because it won't dent, rust or get hot, and it can be stained to look like wood. Steel costs less, insulates well and is very strong. It makes sense on sheltered porches and side doors where dents and chips are less likely.

How long does it take to replace a front door?

Most entry doors take one day to install, including the frame, sill, trim and capping outside. Doors with two sidelites or a transom can take longer. Ordering usually takes several weeks, since most doors are built to order in your size, colour and glass. You're never left with an open doorway overnight.

Can you replace just the door and keep the frame?

It's possible, but we rarely recommend it. A new slab in an old frame rarely seals well, because old frames twist and old sills wear. A pre-hung system comes with its own frame, sill and weatherstripping, all built to close square. That's why most drafty doors need the full replacement, not just a new slab.

Why is there a draft under my front door?

Usually the door threshold has worn, the sweep at the bottom of the door has torn, or the house has settled so the door no longer meets the sill evenly. An adjustable threshold fixes small gaps. When the frame itself is out of square, a full entry door replacement is the lasting fix.

Do new entry doors qualify for a rebate in Ontario?

Sometimes. Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program has paid $100 per ENERGY STAR window or door opening, after a home energy assessment and when the program is open. Rules and funding change, so check the current terms on the Save on Energy site before you book the install.

Do I need a permit to replace my front door in Oshawa?

Not for a same-size replacement on a house. The City of Oshawa lists same-size window and door replacement as work that doesn't need a building permit. Widening the opening to add sidelites or double doors is an alteration, so it needs a permit. We confirm which applies when we measure.
