Casement & Awning Windows in Oshawa, ON
Oshawa Prestige Windows & Doors installs more casement windows. Oshawa houses facing the lake wind need them more than any other style, and a casement window closes by pulling the sash hard into the frame. In plain terms, the wind pushes it tighter instead of whistling through. We fit casements, awning windows and hopper windows in vinyl, fibreglass or wood-clad frames. Feel a draft at the bottom corner of an old slider? A casement is usually the fix.
Oshawa Prestige Windows & Doors provides casement window replacement to Oshawa and surrounding Ontario cities, including Ajax, Bowmanville, Whitby, Courtice and Pickering. The estimator sizes each opening, then checks it again before the order goes in. Our crews put in about 1,100 openings a year across Durham Region, and a house of ten casements is usually done in a day. If you're not set on a style yet, our vinyl windows page compares them all.
Types of Casement Windows in Oshawa
Casements come in more shapes than most people think. These are the ones we put in every month.
Single Casement Windows
One sash on side hinges, opened by a crank. It's the standard bedroom and kitchen window in newer Durham homes. The whole sash opens, so you get twice the airflow of a slider the same size. We'd pick hinges on the side the wind comes from, so the open sash scoops the breeze in.
Double Casement Windows
Two casements in one frame that open out from the middle, sometimes called a French casement. They suit wide openings over a sink or a desk, with no post in the middle when both are open. Each sash has its own crank, so you can open just one on a cold day.
Casement and Picture Window Combos
A big fixed picture window with a casement on one or both ends. It's the most common living room setup we install in 1960s and 1970s Oshawa bungalows. You get the view of one big pane and fresh air from the ends. The fixed glass also costs less per square foot than glass that opens.
Awning Windows
Awning windows hinge at the top and push out at the bottom. Rain runs off the open sash, so you can leave one cracked during a summer shower. They work high on a wall for privacy, in bathrooms, or stacked under a picture window. We think they're the most underrated window on the list.
Hopper Windows for Basements
A hopper window tips in from the top, the opposite of an awning. Basement openings are short and sit near the ground, so a hopper that opens inward clears the window well. Window Mart lists hoppers from $359 before install. On full-frame jobs we often swap old steel basement units for hopper windows.
Casement Windows for Bedroom Egress
A basement bedroom needs a window an adult can climb out of in a fire. The Ontario Building Code asks for 0.35 m² of open area with no side under 380 mm. Because the whole sash swings clear, a casement meets that size in a smaller opening than a slider. Ask us early if the room is a bedroom.
Casement Window Replacement for Old Sliders
Plenty of 1990s subdivisions in north Oshawa and Brooklin got builder-grade sliders that now rattle and fog. Swapping them for casements in the same opening is one of our most common jobs. On a recent house in Brooklin we replaced 16 sliders, 4 of them fogged, with casement and awning combos in two days.
Why We Get the Call for Casement Windows

- Bedroom openings checked against the egress size before we order
- Cranks, hinges and locks the factory-trained techs can still get parts for
- Sills checked with a moisture meter, so rot doesn't get capped over
- Ten casements in a day on most homes, with daily clean-up
- More than 35 years of putting windows into Durham houses

Why Old Casements Stop Closing Tight
Casements are simple, but a few parts take the wear. When an older one won't seal, it's usually one of these, and some can be fixed without a new window:
- The crank gear strips, so the sash won't pull in the last inch. A new operator is a cheap repair.
- The weatherstripping flattens after 15 or 20 winters and lets air past the sash.
- The hinge arms wear and the sash sags, so it rubs the frame and won't latch.
- The sealed unit fails and fogs. That needs new glass or a new window.
- The wood sill under it has gone soft from years of freeze-thaw. That one needs a full-frame replacement.
Caulking a drafty casement every fall is like taping a hockey glove. It works for a season, then the palm goes. If we find two or more of these on one window, replacing it usually costs less over five years than patching it.
Choosing Glass for a Casement Window
Glass is where most of the comfort comes from. A Low-E coating reflects heat back inside, and argon gas between the panes slows the cold. For bedrooms by a busy road, laminated glass cuts noise. Bathrooms get obscure glass, which is frosted so no one sees in. North and lake-facing walls are where triple pane earns its money.
Casement Windows FAQ
Are casement windows better than sliders?
For sealing, yes. A casement window presses into its frame when it locks, so it lets in less air than a slider, whose sashes slide past each other on a track. Casements also open fully for airflow. Sliders cost a little less and suit spots where a sash can't swing out, like next to a deck.
What is the difference between casement and awning windows?
Both crank out, but on different hinges. A casement is hinged on the side and swings out like a door. An awning window is hinged at the top and tilts out at the bottom, so you can leave it open in light rain. Awnings are usually smaller and often sit above or below a fixed window.
Can a casement window be an egress window?
Yes, and it's often the easiest way to meet the size. The Ontario Building Code asks for at least 0.35 m² of open area with no side under 380 mm for a bedroom egress window. A casement's whole sash swings clear, so a smaller rough opening can still pass. We check the numbers before ordering.
Do casement windows work with screens?
Yes. Because the sash swings outward, the screen sits on the inside of a casement window, where it stays clean and out of the weather. You open and close the window with the crank without touching the screen. Most screens pop out from the inside for washing in the spring.
How long does casement window replacement take?
The order takes 6 to 10 weeks for most custom vinyl casements. The install is fast: a typical 10-opening house is done in one day by a two-person crew. Full-frame jobs, where the old frame comes out down to the rough opening, take one to two days.
Can you fix my casement crank instead of replacing the window?
Often, yes. A stripped crank operator, worn hinge arms or flat weatherstripping can be replaced on their own, and our factory-trained technicians can find parts for windows made decades ago. If the glass has fogged or the sill is soft, a repair won't last, and we'll tell you that straight.
